CLUBS & CLASSES

Find a Club or Class and join the fun!

Backgammon

Backgammon Night at the SSI Recreation Center on the third Tuesday of every month, and you’re invited! Pros, newbies, and “I’m just here for the laughs” players are all welcome. Whether you know the game by heart or have never touched the board, you’ll find a relaxed, welcoming group happy to play, teach, and laugh together. Bring a snack, a sip, or simply your cheerful self. Questions? Don’t be shy—we’re nice, we promise.

Bocce Ball

Bocce is a relaxed yet strategic game with ancient roots that is easy to learn and fun for all skill levels. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors, get some light exercise, and spend time with friends and neighbors. The Summerset I Bocce season runs from April through the end of September, with games played on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Each March, we hold an informational meeting to determine how many teams we’ll have and to welcome both returning and new players. Whether you’ve played for years or have never picked up a bocce ball, you’re invited to join us! We’ll help you learn the game and find a team. Watch for our March flyer with meeting details and sign-up information. We look forward to seeing you on the courts for another fun season of friendly competition and fellowship!

Book Club

The Summerset I Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 3 pm in the Summerset I library. The group is open to residents from all the Summersets. We have a special meeting in December and choose the books for the next year. We read fiction and non-fiction, classics and new bestsellers. New members are always welcome. You can call me at (925) 240-1908 or drop in at the next meeting.

Bunco Group

Bunco is a fast-paced dice game mixed with a little bit of friendly competition and a lot of socializing. Come join in the fun. This game is a great way to meet new people. Newcomers are always welcome. We play on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:00 PM.  If you have any questions, feel free to call Mary Mackres at (612) 791-7156.

Casual Coffee Group

Please join us on Wednesdays for Coffee at the Summerset I Rec. Center from 3-4 PM.  Coffee and hot tea are free.  All Summerset I residents are welcome to drop by for a casual social visit with your neighbors.

Essentrics Classes

Essentrics: Aging Backwards with Arlene is aimed at regaining your mobility while slowly building strength and reawakening the power of your muscles. It is designed for those who have atrophy-related stiffness, frozen shoulder, chronic aches and pains, or who are beginning to exercise after a long sedentary period. For men and women of all ages who are looking for a gentle, slow tempo class. Classes are on Tuesday & Thursday at 11:00 AM in the Summerset I Recreation Center. Please contact Diane to sign up and for more information.

Kare Bears

Since 1995, the Kare Bears have been proving that a small group of caring neighbors can make a big difference. Founded by Dorothy Huber, our organization has spent more than 30 years making Summerset I not only a wonderful place to live, but an even better place to call home. Thanks to our fundraising efforts, we’ve helped provide improvements that benefit everyone, including the benches and artificial turf in front of the clubhouse, the handicap-accessible front door, the clubhouse AED (defibrillator), hearing assistance devices, and donations to charitable organizations in memory of neighbors we’ve lost. Every dollar we raise is invested right back into our SSI community.

Librarians

Come in, relax, and enjoy browsing our wonderful library! We have over 1,200 books and puzzles with something for everyone to enjoy. Our collection includes novels, biographies, hardbacks and paperbacks, all available free for residents to borrow. Whether you’re looking for your next great read, a fascinating biography, or a fun puzzle, we invite you to take your time and peruse our shelves.  We also welcome donations of gently used books and puzzles published or released in 2016 or later. Your donations help us keep our collection fresh, interesting, and enjoyable for everyone in our community.

Mahjong

Mahjong was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. Similar to the western card game called Rummy, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and luck, and is played using tiles. Summerset I plays Asian/Chinese mahjong (as opposed to American Mahjong) every Thursday from 1 pm – 3 pm. We meet in the Summerset I library.  If you have not played mahjong before, please feel free to drop in and observe.  If you are interested in learning the game and joining the group, we are happy to teach you.  Being a part of this group offers not only a way to help keep your mind active but also an afternoon of fun and fellowship.

Mexican Train Dominos

Plays every Wednesday from 1-4pm in the Summerset I Craft Room.

Pickleball

Come join us for the joy that Pickleball brings – fun, fitness and new friends. It may also help to improve your memory. We play on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in Summerset I at 8:30 in the summer and 9:00 in the winter at the SSI courts on Central Park Place.  We can help you get started, explain the rules, and if you need a paddle, we have extras to use.

Pinochle

The Pinochle group meets the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month.  We play single deck and rotate partners.  We start at 6 pm sharp and end about 8:45 pm.
